If you put your camera on macro or portrait it often shortens the depth of field and blurs the background and gives a nice look. Steven from sometimes photoblog has perfect examples of this. Or you can do it in photoshop/elements.

The nails are incredible. I agree with what Kmm said about depth of field, but it's tough in bright sunlight. Sometimes to clean up a background all you need to do is shoot low and up at a subject.

That is what I need for my mailbox, since we sometimes have mailbox vandals around here. LOL! Great idea for the Challenge.
